The Friends & Family of
Correctional Officers
Holds Rally

The Friends & Family of Correctional Officers organization, formed around the issue of safety for correctional officers at US Penitentiary in Atwater, held a rally in Atwater at noon, Tuesday.....Full Story

This is about leadership….and having the courage to do what is right and not politically expedient. We had a young man killed at the Atwater Penitentiary – it never should have happened! …and more importantly, it was avoidable. Jose Rivera’s tragic death on June 20, 2008, has demanded that we open our eyes and address the unsafe working conditions the men and women in the Bureau of Prisons endure. No longer can we stand by and watch our friends and families who live in our community put themselves in unnecessary danger.

This is about our community…we want our businesses and institutions to provide families with a healthy and safe working environment and enhance the quality of life that we all strive for.

This is about our community…we want active participation and dialogue to insure that everyone’s interests are being addressed

MISSION STATEMENT

FRIENDS and FAMILY OF CORRECTIONAL OFFICERS

Resolves - that the Federal Bureau of Prisons needs to immediately implement policy changes to better protect Correctional Officers working in United States Penitentiaries and USP-Atwater, by implementing the points below:

• The Federal Bureau of Prisons will issue up to date, properly fitted and certified stab resistant vests, as well as other non-lethal equipment, including, but not limited to, such items as tear gas (OC), Asp, baton, or Tasers to Correctional Officers at USP – Atwater.

• Housing Units at USP – Atwater will be staffed with a minimum of two (2) Correctional Officers in each housing unit (2 in “A” side and 2 in “B” side) at all times.

• The lockdown currently in place at USP – Atwater shall remain in effect until appropriate policy changes identified above are implemented and will not be ended until all staff with direct inmate contact inside USP-Atwater are, at an absolute minimum, provided with properly fitted stab resistant vests and at least one non-lethal piece of protective equipment, and the minimum staffing requirements above, are in place.

"Never Forget, Never Again" USP Atwater - Officer Jose Rivera EOW 06-20-2008.
